Accelerating environmental changes in the Mediterranean Basin cause increasing risks to people and nature: a new synthesis. Recent accelerated climate change has exacerbated existing environmental problems in the Mediterranean Basin that are caused by the combination of changes in land use, increasing pollution and declining biodiversity. In most impact domains (such as water, ecosystems, food, health and security), current change and future scenarios consistently point to significant and increasing risks during the coming decades. A preliminary assessment of risk associated to these changes in the Mediterranean region has been prepared by the MedECC in collaboration with decision-makers. Following an open call for self-nominations Coordinating Lead Authors (CLAs) and Lead Authors (LAs) of the 1st MedECC Assessment Report (MAR1) have been appointed. Among 71 appointed authors, 28 (39%) represent southern and eastern Mediterranean countries and 24 (34%) are women. Read more. |
An IPCC special report on the impacts of global warming of 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels and related global greenhouse gas emission pathways, in the context of strengthening the global response to the threat of climate change, sustainable development, and efforts to eradicate poverty has been approved during the IPCC Plenary Session in Korea, 1-5 October 2018. Only 19 of the 52 glaciers that were in the Pyrenees in 1850 are gone, most since 1980. In Spain, only a handful of glaciers remain, with Monte Perdido and Maladeta being the largest of them.
