The progress of the MedECC was presented by the MedECC Coordinator, Joel Guiot (Air-Climat, CEREGE, CNRS, France), during the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Second Meeting of the Working Group on Environment and Climate Change (WGECC), which took place on 12-13 November 2018 in Barcelona, Spain.
The Working Group is mandated by the UfM Ministerial Declaration on Environment and Climate Change (Athens, 2014) to meet regularly, at least every two years, and where appropriate in synergy with other regional meetings dealing with environment or climate issues. The Working group aims to review progress in the implementation up to date of the recommendations of the 2014 UfM Ministerial Declaration on Environment and Climate Change, and provide suggestions for further action and follow up.
The UfM Ministerial Declaration of Athens expressed the need for a Mediterranean regional vulnerability assessment regarding climate change impacts. UfM Member States welcomed the willingness of the scientists gathered within the MedECC network to contribute to the vulnerability assessment of the Mediterranean regarding climate and environmental impacts. The MedECC Secretariat is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) through Union for the Mediterranean and is hosted by Plan Bleu (UN Environment Mediterranean Action Plan Regional Activity Center) in Marseille, France.
