MedECC participated in the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Climate Week from 23 to 25 April 2018 in Barcelona, Spain.
A wide range of actors were present, including UfM members’ representatives, Mediterranean Youth Climate Network (MYCN), organisations, scientific experts…, around different topics, all related to climate action in the Mediterranean region.
On 23 April 2018, during the UfM Climate Change Scientific Meeting, Wolfgang Cramer (MedECC Coordinator) presented the scientific update on climate and environmental change in the Mediterranean Basin, as well as the MedECC work plan for the first assessment of trends. Katarzyna Marini (MedECC Science Officer) presented the MedECC’s foundations, history, objectives and organisation.
The UfM Climate Week included the Sixth Meeting of the Union for the Mediterranean Climate Change Expert Group (UfMCCEG), which put a special focus on two key topics: tourism and agriculture and the water-food-energy nexus. This meeting is also considered as a kick-off of MedECC Secretariat (funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency through the Union for the Mediterranean). MedECC has been presented by Katarzyna Marini (MedECC Science Officer) and Maria Snoussi (MedECC Steering Committee Member; Mohammed V University, Rabat, Morocco). It has been demonstrated that UfM now has decided to rely on MedECC for the scientific assessment of the climate change impacts on the Mediterranean basin.
Several members of MedECC Steering Committee were present: Wolfgang Cramer (CNRS, France), Arnault Graves (UfM, Spain), Elen Lemaitre-Curri (Plan Bleu, France), Julien Le Tellier (MAP-Barcelona Convention Secretariat, Greece), Maria Carmen Llasat (University of Barcelona, Spain), Arnau Queralt Bassa (CADS, Spain) and Maria Snoussi (Mohammed V University, Morocco).
